Introduction

Whenever we visit a website, our browser needs a way to communicate with the website's server. This communication happens using certain protocols, and two of the most common ones are HTTP and HTTPS.

Although they look almost identical, there is an important difference between them. HTTPS provides an additional layer of security by encrypting the information exchanged between the browser and the server.

What Is HTTP?

HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. It is a protocol used to transfer information between a web browser and a web server.

For example, when you open a website, your browser sends a request to the server. The server processes the request and sends the required information back to the browser.

HTTP can transfer different types of resources, including:

  • Web pages

  • Images

  • Text

  • Videos

  • Files

  • Other website resources

However, normal HTTP communication is not encrypted. This means the information being transferred can potentially be viewed if the connection is intercepted.

What Is HTTPS?

HTTPS stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure.

HTTPS works similarly to HTTP, but it adds encryption to protect communication between the browser and the server.

HTTPS uses TLS (Transport Layer Security) to encrypt the connection. This makes it much harder for unauthorized people to read or modify the information being transferred.

This is particularly important when a website handles sensitive information such as passwords, payment details, or personal information.

For example, imagine logging into a website using a username and password. With an encrypted HTTPS connection, the communication is protected from many forms of network interception.

HTTPS also helps protect the integrity of communication, making it harder for attackers to secretly modify information while it is being transmitted.

Where Is HTTPS Used?

Today, HTTPS is commonly used across the web.

It is especially important for:

  • Online banking

  • Shopping websites

  • Social media

  • Email services

  • Login pages

  • Payment websites

  • Websites that collect personal information

Even websites that do not collect sensitive information commonly use HTTPS because secure communication is now a basic expectation on the modern web.
